Finally I have time for the things I enjoy doing. Not that I didn’t enjoy school, but finally hobbies and the time to further hone in on creative skills have become a reality.
A week ago AIGA Nebraska hosted a letterpress workshop, and with the financial backing of Jacht Ad Lab, I got the chance to attend with four other previous, current and new Jachters. Fueled on coffee and donuts we began the time-consuming process that is traditional letterpress printing, beginning with the design and careful layout of an array of wood- and lead type, cuts and leading to make sure everything stayed in place as the presses got moving.
I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Saturday! Somehow, taking the analogue approach to my profession is such a relief. I can’t be the only graphic designer who will get halfway through a project and want to rip my hair out because I can’t just stick my hands in there to make it right. While we tend to go hand-in-hand with technology, going back to the roots is the most meditative process.
